ZHEC is in the vanguard of environmental engineering in Hong Kong.
Beginning in 1986 with the initial landfill project promoted by
the Hong Kong SAR Government, ZHEC has been directly responsible
for managing the majority of solid waste in Hong Kong. The volume
of waste handled by the company between 1991 and 1994 amounted to
70% of the solid waste produced in Hong Kong.
Since 1995, ZHEC has played an active part in the restoration
works for closed landfill sites, including their design, construction
and operation.
As a leading member of Hong Kong Landfill Restoration Group Ltd.,
ZHEC has successfully secured two contracts in Hong Kong to undertake
the restorations of six closed landfill sites. ZHEC works closely
with the Environmental Protection Department to ensure a high
standard of environmental performance capability.
ZHEC has also proposed and successfully executed a number of
plans for the re-use of environmental resources. The completion
of a landfill gas electricity generation facility in the Jordan
Valley landfill site, an auxiliary energy facility for town gas
generation making use of landfill gases collected from Sheung
Wan Landfill Site, and the construction of a golf driving range
after landfill restoration all serve as good examples of the re-use
of environmental resources.
In 2001, ZHEC introduced environmental technologies from Canada.
In this project the company employs an advanced biochemical technology
in the treatment of contaminated sediments to solve the pollution
problems that have plagued the Shing Mun River for many years.
This is one of the largest-scale biochemical treatment projects
of its kind in the world. The technical problems and complications
ZHEC faced have been especially onerous, but the company saw the
work through successfully. This project achieved a major milestone
for the riverbed environment restoration.
ZHEC is eager to strengthen its development in the area of environmental
protection projects in order to create a healthier ecological
environment for the public.
